2003 Annual Report
Report of the Conservation Commission

To the Citizens of Hanson and the Honorable Board of Selectman:

The purpose of the Conservation Commission is to protect our natural resources and uphold the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Hanson Wetlands By-Law.  The jurisdiction of the Commission is to review activities within 100 feet of any wetland and 200 feet of a perennial stream. During the 2003 Calendar Year, the Commission received 34 Notices of Intent (major projects proposed within 100 feet of a Bordering Vegetated Wetlands), 21 Requests for Determinations (To determine if the work proposed is within the Commission’s jurisdiction) and 2 Abbreviated Notice of Resource Area Delineations (To determine the wetland line accuracy) for which public meetings were scheduled, advertised and held at the Town Hall.   The Commission issued 28 Orders of Conditions, 20 Determinations of Applicability and 11 Certificates of Compliance.  Also, several Enforcement Orders were issued for violations of the State & Local Wetlands Protection Regulations.  The agent, Patricia Cassady reviewed 197 Building Permit Applications, the majority of which needed at least one site visit.

We wish to thank Mary Puleio for filling in as an interim secretary.  Mike King, Judy Collins, Deb McKeen, Steve Croghan and Arthur Gelsi all resigned from the Board this year.  We thank them for their combined years of service and for their time and effort volunteering especially during the time the Commission was in transition.   Presently, the Board is short one member and is hoping to acquire a volunteer for this position.

Currently, the Board has appointed two people from the Open Space Committee as associate members to compile an accurate list of Conservation lands in town.  With this information, we would like to create a brochure of all significant properties accessible to the public to include not only Conservation lands but other public recreation lands as well.  We are also working on a website that will provide information to townspeople regarding the Wetlands Protection Act and local by-law as well as links to relevant Conservation websites.

The Conservation Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM in Meeting Room A on the second floor of the Town Hall.  The public is invited to attend.

In conclusion, the Commission extends their thanks to all Town Committees, Boards, Departments, and the citizens of the Town of Hanson for their support, cooperation, dedication and efforts to protect and preserve the Town of Hanson’s valuable natural resources.

Respectfully submitted:

Philip R. Lindquist, Chairman           Craig Nicholson-Member
Ron Grattan Vice Chairman                       Phil Clemons- Associate Member
Amy Gardner, Clerk                              Bob Dillon – Associate Member
