VA Recognized War Time Periods

When claiming veteran benefits, it's essential to establish if the veteran served during a recognized wartime period. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) acknowledges specific time frames for various conflicts throughout history. Here are the VA-recognized wartime periods:

  1. Mexican Border period: This period lasted from May 9, 1916, to April 5, 1917. Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or in adjacent waters during this time are eligible.

  2. World War I: The recognized period for World War I is from April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918. Veterans who served during this time are considered World War I veterans.

  3. World War II: For World War II, the VA recognizes the period from December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946. Veterans who served during this time are considered World War II veterans.

  4. Korean conflict: The Korean conflict spans from June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955. Veterans who served during this time are considered Korean War veterans.

  5. Vietnam War era: The Vietnam War era is divided into two periods. The first is from November 1, 1955, to May 7, 1975, for veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam. The second period is from August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975, for veterans who served outside the Republic of Vietnam.

  6. Gulf War: The Gulf War officially started on August 2, 1990, and the end date is yet to be determined by law or presidential proclamation. Veterans who served during this period are considered Gulf War veterans.

It's important to note that for a veteran to claim they served in a specific war period, their DD214 or official military document “MUST” reflect that they served between the dates recognized by the VA as the time frame for the conflict. This documentation is crucial in establishing eligibility for certain benefits and services provided by the VA.

Suppose a Veteran or claimant believes they are eligible for benefits due to the Veteran serving during a recognized wartime period. In that case, gathering the necessary documentation and contacting the VA or Veteran Service Organization to initiate the claims process is advisable. These entities have resources available to guide veterans and claimants through the application process and provide assistance in obtaining the benefits they deserve.
