Adopt-A-Trail Program

WHAT IS THE ADOPT-A-TRAIL (AAT) PROGRAM?

The Adopt-A-Trail Program is designed to allow volunteers to take responsibility for regular trail maintenance of a trail, section of trail, stream banks, adjacent roadsides or parking areas. We will provide training as appropriate to all Adopters to ensure they are trained and confident to perform their work in a safe manner. The goal is to attract volunteers who walk a section of trail on a regular basis who are willing to perform basic clean-up and maintenance to keep that trail in great shape and inviting for our fellow citizens to enjoy.

The program is under the supervision of the Conservation Commissioners and volunteers will report to an assigned Commissioner. The work will involve a weekly walk along “your trail” (or section of trail) in order to monitor trail conditions and report to the “Trail Supervisor” regarding conditions that require attention. You are not responsible for Projects on the trail, and are not expected to do more than a basic weekly (or biweekly) patrol. In the course of your “patrol” you will be expected to pick up any small trash or litter in the parking area or along the trail and small sticks, branches or brush that may have fallen on the treadway. Larger maintenance activities or trail improvements will be managed by the Commission on an as needed basis. The time commitment is entirely up to you…an hour per week, or an hour per month, or more…or less…entirely your decision.

Friends of the Trails will be able to volunteer for Work Days according to their interest and skill levels, for seasonal clean-ups, trail improvement projects and new trail development projects.

Please contact the Conservation Commission office at lwoodward@hanson-ma.gov for additional information or to sign up for this program or to register for our Projects Volunteer List.
